One of Hayes Barton’s most-watched corners is finally stirring again. The former Mandolin space on Fairview Road, dark since the restaurant shut its doors in August 2025 after nearly 14 years, is getting a new tenant, and neighbors are keeping close tabs on the renovation work.
According to the Triangle Business Journal, a restaurant operator has signed a lease for the address and is targeting a fall opening. The team has already started pre-opening work inside the space but has not revealed a name or a firm opening date.
Mandolin’s Hayes Barton roots
Mandolin, led by chef Sean Fowler and supplied in part by his Mandolin Farm, closed abruptly in August 2025, as reported by the News & Observer. Fowler told the paper that shutting down was a difficult call and that he and his wife were already working on a new project while the fate of the prominent corner was still up in the air.
What to expect next
Details on the new concept are still under wraps, but the incoming restaurant represents the first significant reuse of the Fairview Road corner since Mandolin’s closure and could once again give the neighborhood a go-to dining anchor. The operator’s aim for a fall debut comes as Raleigh’s restaurant scene continues its rapid churn of openings and closings, with Hayes Barton residents now waiting to see what lands in their backyard.
