What started as a traffic stop on NC-87 in Lee County ended with a car stuck behind a gas station, a man in custody, and a stash of drugs and a handgun recovered, according to sheriff's officials. Deputies say 35-year-old Christopher Sean Tyson is being held without bond and is now facing a long list of trafficking and weapons charges.
What deputies say
According to ABC11, deputies first tried to pull over a vehicle on NC-87 for motor-vehicle violations. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly took off, leading officers on a pursuit along the highway.
That chase ended behind a gas station, where the driver tried to pull back onto the road and got stuck, ABC11 reports. Deputies then moved in and took the suspect into custody.
Evidence and charges
As reported by WRAL, deputies who searched the vehicle say they found fentanyl, cocaine, and marijuana inside. Dempsey, a Lee County K‑9, later tracked down a handgun that investigators say the driver tossed away along his flight path.
WRAL reports that Tyson is facing a slate of charges that include two counts of trafficking fentanyl, two counts of trafficking cocaine, possession of a firearm by a felon, multiple counts of possession with intent to sell, maintaining a vehicle for the sale of controlled substances, felony flee to elude, and several traffic and resisting charges.
What the law says
Trafficking fentanyl or cocaine is a felony in North Carolina, and penalties increase with the amount involved, under state law in G.S. 90-95, according to the North Carolina General Assembly. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is separately prohibited in G.S. 14-415.1 and also treated as a felony, the North Carolina General Assembly notes, meaning the trafficking and weapons counts can move forward side by side in state court.
Where this fits
The arrest comes as federal and state agencies have stepped up enforcement targeting fentanyl and related trafficking. The DEA reported major seizures and multi-agency operations this year under its "Fentanyl Free America" initiative, saying those efforts removed millions of potentially lethal doses and led to thousands of arrests nationwide.
What's next
Tyson, whom deputies identified as 35-year-old Christopher Sean Tyson, has additional pending charges in Harnett and Randolph counties and remains held without bond, WRAL reports. The case will proceed through Lee County courts, and prosecutors and the sheriff's office have not released further information beyond initial statements to local media.
