A pre-dawn commute on San Antonio’s North Side turned tragic Wednesday when a man ran into the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at West Hildebrand Avenue and was hit by a truck and a VIA bus, police said.
The collision happened around 4 a.m. First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene, and eastbound I-10 was shut down for several hours while investigators worked, backing up traffic across the morning rush.
According to News4SanAntonio, San Antonio police said the man ran into the main lanes of traffic, where he was struck first by a truck and then by a VIA Metropolitan Transit bus. Crews expected the highway to remain closed for hours as investigators documented the scene and cleared the vehicles.
Hildebrand corridor flagged for pedestrian danger
Per the City of San Antonio's Vision Zero report, the area around West Hildebrand is listed among the city's "severe pedestrian injury areas." That designation reflects a long-running pattern of serious pedestrian crashes along this corridor, which the city has prioritized for safety improvements based on crash data.
Past deadly incidents on the same stretch
Deadly incidents on this section of I-10 are not a first. KSAT reported a similar fatality on the same stretch in January 2025, when the eastbound lanes were also shut down for hours. That history underscores how risky the area can be for people on foot near the interstate ramps.
What officials say now

Authorities have not released the victim's name or any additional information about why he went into the traffic lanes. The case remains under investigation.
