Late Friday on San Antonio’s Northwest Side, a man believed to be between 40 and 50 years old was struck and killed while trying to cross Huebner Road. Emergency crews were dispatched to the 11500 block of Huebner, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Lanes were shut down as investigators worked the roadway well into the night.
What investigators say
San Antonio Police Department officers responded around 10:18 p.m. to what the department described as a major accident call. According to KENS 5, the pedestrian was hit by a blue Infiniti traveling eastbound. Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The victim’s name has not been released, and authorities have only estimated his age as roughly 40 to 50 years old while detectives continue to gather evidence.
Where this fits in a wider trend
Pedestrian deaths have climbed across Texas in recent years, and people on foot now make up a growing share of traffic fatalities, according to data from the Texas Department of Transportation. TxDOT’s traffic-safety dashboard shows pedestrian fatalities account for roughly one in five traffic deaths, a pattern transportation officials have flagged as a statewide concern. Local safety advocates and planners have repeatedly pointed to high-speed arterials, including stretches around Huebner and nearby freeways, as places where pedestrians are especially vulnerable.
Legal note
Under Texas law, the operator of a vehicle involved in a crash that results in injury or death must stop, return to the scene and render reasonable aid. Failing to do so can be prosecuted under Transportation Code Section 550.021. The statute spells out duties to determine whether a person requires assistance and to provide or arrange transport for medical care, and penalties escalate when a crash causes serious injury or death. Police said the driver in this case stayed and cooperated with investigators, and the probe remains active.
What’s next
San Antonio police continue to investigate the collision and the circumstances that led to the pedestrian being in the roadway. Other dangerous crossings near Huebner were previously reported, underscoring longstanding safety concerns on the Northwest Side that this latest death brings back into focus.
