Online comments turned into handcuffs in Elkhorn after police say a 19-year-old man posted life-threatening messages aimed at a local firefighter and several county officials.

The Facebook posts, which reportedly referenced events in Elkhorn and nearby Lake Geneva, included a photo of local leaders. What might have looked like just another ugly thread on social media quickly escalated into a criminal case, heightening local concern about how fast online harassment can cross the legal line when public servants are involved.

Police say they received a complaint about the posts on Wednesday, May 27. Detectives opened an investigation and uncovered additional threatening statements tied to the same account. Working with the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Elkhorn investigators pulled information from electronic sources that they say pointed to a suspect.

Authorities then arrested 19-year-old Dakotah Burns and charged him with multiple counts of making terrorist threats and threatening to cause bodily harm to people connected to the court system, according to FOX6 News Milwaukee.

Local tensions add context

The arrest comes as relations between Elkhorn’s fire department and city leadership are already running hot. Last month, city hall issued a four-page directive telling firefighters to route media questions through the mayor’s office, after crews publicly raised alarms about staffing and safety. That attempt to rein in public comments from firefighters has fed a tense backdrop now colliding with a very public criminal case.

Legal note

Prosecutors are treating the case as serious business, with terrorism-style threat counts stemming from the review of Burns’ alleged online activity. A charge is merely an accusation, however, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, language that regularly appears in Elkhorn Police Department releases. A recent city press release from the Elkhorn Police Department includes that same disclaimer.

What’s next

The investigation is still active. Law enforcement officials are asking anyone with additional information about the online threats or related activity to contact local authorities. For official contact details and current news releases, residents can visit the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office page on the county website.
