After Spirit Airlines' abrupt shutdown left local employees without paychecks, CareerSource Central Florida is moving fast to help those workers get back on their feet. The agency is hosting a rapid-response job fair on Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the East Coast Dream Center in Oviedo, aiming to connect former Spirit staff with nearby employers and workforce services in one concentrated push.
Organizers told local media that nearly 1,600 regional employees were affected by Spirit's closure and that more than 20 employers are expected to show up ready to hire, according to WFTV. The outlet reports that Rosen Hotels & Resorts, Disney, Universal Orlando Resort, Evermore Orlando Resort, Concentrix, Trustco Bank and the City of St. Cloud are among the employers planning to recruit at the fair.
Where and When
CareerSource Central Florida's event page confirms the May 27 job fair at the CareerSource Central Florida Community Hub at the East Coast Dream Center, 3053 W State Rd 426 in Oviedo, and asks job seekers to register via a contact form, according to CareerSource Central Florida. The agency also notes it will offer resume assistance, career coaching and access to training for displaced workers.
Who's Hiring
More than 20 employers are expected to be on site, offering roles across hospitality, customer service and back-office operations, per WFTV. The lineup reflects Central Florida's heavy reliance on tourism and leisure employers, sectors that frequently seek out workers with airline and customer-service experience.
How CareerSource Can Help
CareerSource's rapid-response resources include resume help, targeted job-search assistance and referrals to training programs, and staff will be on hand at the hub to meet one-on-one with displaced workers, according to CareerSource Central Florida. Job seekers who cannot attend the fair in person are encouraged to contact CareerSource for individualized support and virtual workshops.
State officials say the May 27 event is one of several Rapid Response efforts across Florida intended to blunt the fallout from the airline's shutdown, including earlier job fairs at Orlando Executive Airport and partner centers elsewhere, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. For former Spirit employees, the Oviedo fair offers a direct line to local openings and a potential on-ramp to retraining while hiring activity ramps up.
