Prantl's Bakery's Shadyside storefront was slapped with a consumer alert Thursday after an Allegheny County inspection found rodent droppings on dozens of surfaces and one very decomposed rat in the basement. County inspectors posted the yellow placard at the 5525 Walnut Street shop and ordered corrective work, while allowing the business to keep operating under a temporary notice.
What inspectors found
The comprehensive check on Thursday turned up droppings in a long list of spots, from the dish machine and icing station to pastry boxes, the crumb tray of the bread slicer and even the employee restroom, according to the Allegheny County inspection report. Inspectors also documented "one very decomposed rat" in the basement.
The report does not sugarcoat the overall conditions. It states, "The facility is not being cleaned. The rodent droppings are not being properly removed and the areas disinfected." According to the same report, the operator could not produce pest-control service records when asked, and inspectors flagged repeat pest-management violations.
Consumer alert timeline
The yellow consumer alert placard signals that a business has high or recurring violations but can continue to operate for a short time while problems are fixed. A facility can remain open for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days while corrective work is completed and a reinspection is scheduled, as reported by Patch. If violations are still present at the follow-up visit, the health department can order the business closed until the issues are resolved.
Repeat problems and required fixes
The inspection report cites multiple repeat pest-control violations and notes that an administrative conference was held with the owner on Feb. 25, 2025, to address recurring problems, according to the county documents. To get the consumer alert lifted, the report requires a full cleaning of the facility, removal and disinfection of all affected areas, elimination of harborage and non-essential items in storage spaces, and proof of pest-control practices. The county also warned that the yellow placard must not be removed or covered up.
Response and what customers should know
Prantl's still lists the Shadyside shop on its website, but as of Friday, the bakery had not posted any public response to the inspection findings. The location page for the Walnut Street store remains accessible on the company's site. Local outlets have highlighted the alert and pointed readers to the county's inspection report, including a summary by CBS News Pittsburgh for those who want to dig into the details.
