A pre-dawn fight on Milwaukee's south side turned into gunfire early Saturday, leaving two teenagers wounded and sending a 20-year-old man into custody, police said.
The shooting happened around 3:49 a.m. on May 23 near 27th Street and Whitaker Avenue. According to Milwaukee police, the victims, ages 17 and 18, were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their exact conditions were not released. Officers arrested a 20-year-old man the same morning, and investigators say they are still looking for any additional suspects. Police said criminal charges will be forwarded to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
Police say fight sparked the gunfire
Investigators say the chaos started with a fight at the scene, which escalated into shots being fired, FOX6 News Milwaukee reports. Detectives are working to identify others who may have been involved in the altercation.
The 20-year-old suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, according to FOX6 News Milwaukee. Authorities did not immediately release his name. Police said any potential criminal charges tied to the case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for review.
Citywide trend: fewer non-fatal shootings so far this year
While a shooting like this rattles a neighborhood, city data shows non-fatal gun violence has been trending down in Milwaukee. The police department's quarter-one review notes that non-fatal shootings dropped 27% to 80 incidents in the first three months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. Even with that decline, detectives say they are still racing from scene to scene on weekends like this one.
How to help investigators
Milwaukee police are asking anyone with information about the 27th Street shooting to call the department at 414-935-7360 or contact Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS or through the P3 Tips app, as noted by FOX6 News Milwaukee. Investigators are especially interested in cellphone video from the area and are urging anyone who recorded the aftermath or the fight to hang on to those clips. Police say even a few seconds of footage can provide critical leads.
Legal next steps
Police said they will forward the arrest file to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, which will decide whether to charge the 20-year-old man who was taken into custody. If prosecutors decide to file charges, the case will move into Milwaukee County Circuit Court and follow standard pretrial steps, including arraignment and bail hearings.
