A pre-dawn fire tore through the top floor of a Harrison Township apartment building earlier today, forcing residents out into the night air but, thankfully, leaving no reported injuries in its wake. Neighbors watched from the parking lot as firefighters attacked thick smoke and flames pouring from a top-floor balcony, while officials worked to determine how the blaze began.
What Residents Reported
Residents told Local 4 that the fire started on the balcony of a top-floor unit near the intersection of Union Lake Road and Metro Parkway, and said they did not hear any smoke alarms sounding, according to ClickOnDetroit. Video from the scene showed crews escorting occupants away from the building while fire units doused the flames from outside. Neighbors said there were no injuries reported at the scene.
Fire Department Response
The Harrison Township Fire Department, which operates from two stations and says it aims to reach most emergency calls in about four minutes, serves the area, according to the Harrison Township Fire Department. On-scene footage captured firefighters focusing their efforts on exterior operations to keep the blaze from jumping to neighboring units. By midmorning, crews had the fire under control, but several apartments showed clear smoke and water damage.
Aftermath and Next Steps
ClickOnDetroit reported that several residents were displaced and that investigators had not yet identified a cause. The full extent of the damage and the number of households affected were still unknown, and by midday, neither township officials nor the property owner had released details on support for tenants. We will update this story as officials release more information.
