A predawn fire tore through the Kappa Sigma fraternity house at Davidson College earlier yesterday, charring the building and drawing a massive response from area fire crews. Departments from across the region converged on campus and worked into the morning before the blaze was finally brought under control. As of Sunday morning, college and local officials had not released details on the cause of the fire or whether anyone was hurt.
According to WCNC, the fire started around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and was documented in a photo gallery published by the station. The images, credited to Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue, capture firefighters working the scene in the dark as flames and smoke pour from the structure.
How Crews Responded
Firefighters from Davidson, Cornelius and nearby departments responded to the alarm and battled visible flames for more than an hour before gaining the upper hand, WSOC reported. Officials told the station the blaze served as a sharp reminder of why they roll out in force whenever a campus alarm is triggered, even in the middle of the night.
Photos Show Heavy Smoke and Damage
The photo gallery published by WCNC, with images from Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue, shows thick smoke hanging over the building and crews remaining on scene into the morning hours. The gallery features seven shots of the response. Initial reports did not include a detailed estimate of how much structural damage the fraternity house sustained.
Campus Safety and Next Steps
Davidson maintains public crime and fire logs along with an annual fire-safety report that spell out alarm protocols, evacuation procedures and how incidents get documented. Those resources are the main channels for official campus updates. For more background on how the college records and reports incidents, see Davidson College.
By Sunday morning, officials had not yet released a cause for the fire or a damage estimate, and investigators were expected to go over the scene. Additional details are likely to come from Davidson public safety or local fire authorities as their investigations move forward.
