Wilfried Zaha has started the countdown clock on his time in the Queen City, confirming Sunday that he will leave Charlotte FC when his loan expires on June 30. In an Instagram post, the star winger thanked the city and its supporters, saying he had “loved every minute” of his stint in Charlotte. The announcement closes out a year and a half that brought one of world soccer’s most recognizable wide men to MLS and to Bank of America Stadium.
In a club release, Charlotte FC confirmed that Zaha will depart after the conclusion of his loan on June 30, 2026. The club credited him with 46 appearances across MLS regular season and playoff action, 13 goals and 14 assists, a total of 27 goal contributions that ranks fifth in Charlotte FC history. General manager Zoran Krneta thanked Zaha for his impact and said the Ivorian had been a key part of the attack from the moment he arrived on loan.
Zaha’s Instagram Farewell
Zaha made his decision public with a farewell post on Instagram, writing that “there’s been many highs and many lows… and I loved every minute,” as reported by MLSSoccer. The league’s report noted that Zaha first joined Charlotte in January 2025 and that his deal was extended through June 30 earlier this year, a move that effectively set the end date for his stay in North Carolina.
Roster Ripple Effect
With Zaha now confirmed to be on his way out, Charlotte FC said it will head into the summer with an open Designated Player slot and an available international roster spot. That flexibility gives the front office room to chase reinforcements, whether that means another marquee addition or a more low-key piece that fits long term.
The club also pointed out that it will not play again until July 22, when Charlotte hosts Atlanta United, which shortens the window to get any new faces settled before the stretch run. Major League Soccer’s secondary transfer window runs from July 13 to September 2, giving clubs the period in which they can register international signings, according to ESPN.
Short Run, Big Impact
Zaha’s arrival in January 2025 was billed as a major coup that put Charlotte on the global soccer map and helped the club climb into the top four of the Eastern Conference last season, a point that local outlets have highlighted. As news of his impending exit settles in, fans and pundits around Charlotte have already started debating how the club should use the newly opened roster slots, according to Queen City News. Whether the Crown opts for another headline-grabbing loan or targets a longer-term signing, those choices will shape the back half of Charlotte’s campaign.
Charlotte thanked Zaha and wished him and his family success as they prepare for their next chapter, and the club now turns its focus fully to the summer window and the push after the World Cup break. Supporters will get their next look at the Zaha-less side when Charlotte returns to MLS play on July 22 against Atlanta United.
