What started as reckless driving along Milwaukee’s lakefront ended with a driver in cuffs and an SUV on a tow truck Monday evening after officers boxed in a large vehicle near the lagoon at Veterans Park.
Milwaukee police and Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputies moved in after a large SUV was seen driving recklessly on Lincoln Memorial Drive and into Veterans Park. Officers eventually cornered the vehicle near the park’s lagoon and ordered the driver out. He initially stayed inside but later surrendered and was taken into custody. The SUV was towed from the scene, and Milwaukee police are handling the investigation.
What Happened
According to FOX6 Milwaukee, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said Milwaukee police units began following the SUV around 7 p.m. after it was spotted driving recklessly. Officers then boxed the vehicle in near the lagoon area of Veterans Park and ordered the man behind the wheel to get out. FOX6 Milwaukee reports the driver ultimately surrendered peacefully before officers had the SUV towed while Milwaukee police continue their investigation.
Why The Tow Matters
The decision to tow the SUV fits into a broader city push to crack down on reckless driving. A recent ordinance allows officers to impound vehicles involved in reckless-driving incidents even on a first offense. Local officials told CBS58 that about 100 vehicles have been impounded since the rule took effect, a shift supporters say gives police a stronger enforcement tool on busy corridors like Lincoln Memorial Drive.
Where It Happened
Veterans Park sits along Lake Michigan beside Lincoln Memorial Drive and includes a 14-acre lagoon. County listings put the park’s address at 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. The lagoon area where officers cornered the SUV is a well-trafficked lakeside spot, which helps explain why people quickly spotted the flashing lights and heavy law enforcement presence, according to Milwaukee County Parks.
Community Reaction
Onlookers did what onlookers do in 2024: they pulled out their phones. Local social media posts and an active Reddit thread shared photos and eyewitness accounts of a heavy police presence and officers cuffing the driver near the park’s flags. Those firsthand accounts are collected in an r/milwaukee thread. While those posts offer on-the-ground color, they do not replace official statements from Milwaukee police and the sheriff’s office as the investigation continues.
