A Sunday afternoon fire on Maryland’s Eastern Shore tore through a commercial chicken house in Federalsburg, killing roughly 35,000 birds and leveling the building, state officials said. The blaze ripped across a 60-by-500-foot tunnel-ventilated house on the 6600 block of Reliance Road, leaving the farm owner staring at an estimated $500,000 in damage after crews spent more than an hour knocking down heavy smoke and heat.
State fire marshal points to tunnel fan failure
Investigators with the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said they believe an electrical or mechanical failure in the chicken house’s tunnel fan likely sparked the blaze. The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. on Sunday and took about 75 to 90 minutes, along with roughly 60 firefighters, to bring under control, according to WBOC.
Damage estimate and response
A release from the state fire marshal’s office put the flock loss at about 35,000 birds and valued the chickens at about one dollar each, or roughly $35,000 of the total loss. Overall damage to the operation is pegged at $500,000. The release said the interior of the building caught fire and the structure was ultimately leveled, WBAL NewsRadio reported.
Tunnel fans and farm fire risk
Tunnel-ventilation systems move huge volumes of air through long poultry houses but depend on electric motors, wiring, and controls that can ignite when components fail. Investigators are expected to scrutinize the fan assembly and electrical system as they zero in on the exact origin. Similar poultry-house fires on the Eastern Shore in recent years have been investigated as accidental electrical or mechanical failures, a reminder of how quickly a single piece of equipment can wipe out tens of thousands of birds, according to WGMD.
Broader pressures on Delmarva producers
The Federalsburg loss lands at a rough moment for Delmarva poultry producers already juggling other threats, including disease. The Maryland Department of Agriculture confirmed a highly pathogenic avian influenza detection on a Caroline County broiler farm in January 2026, a reminder that large poultry operations in the region run on thin margins and face multiple vulnerabilities, according to Maryland Matters. State fire-marshal investigators are continuing their probe into the Reliance Road blaze and will document their findings once the origin work is complete, officials said, per WMAR-2 News.
Local volunteer companies and mutual-aid crews were credited with bringing the fire under control, while county and state agencies began cataloging the damage and mapping out next steps for cleanup and documentation. Officials say the Office of the State Fire Marshal will release additional details once the origin and cause investigation wraps up, and agencies that responded to the scene are continuing to coordinate recovery efforts and reporting, according to WBAL NewsRadio.
