A retired Boston police officer now living in Lady Lake is accused of spinning a bloody story that sent a sheriff’s helicopter and multiple law enforcement agencies scrambling through his neighborhood for his supposedly missing wife.

Lady Lake officers responded around 8:30 PM Monday to an emergency hang-up at the Hammock Oaks home of 66-year-old Lawrence Joseph Sullivan. When they arrived, they reported finding Sullivan at the front door with his right hand covered in dried blood and more blood smeared on the lower floor.

According to officers, Sullivan claimed his wife had attacked him with a sharp object, grabbed his watch and car keys, and then taken off on foot. That account triggered a full neighborhood search by Lady Lake police, Fruitland Park officers, and deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, with the sheriff’s helicopter joining the hunt overhead. Investigators later concluded the stabbing story did not line up with the evidence and arrested Sullivan on charges that include providing false information to law enforcement and battery on a person 65 or older, according to Villages-News.

Wife Found Hiding, Said She Bit His Hand

The sheriff’s helicopter Eagle 1 ultimately spotted Sullivan’s wife hiding just north of the home. She told investigators the couple had been drinking earlier and described her husband as an alcoholic who tended to venture from telling the truth.

She said Sullivan put a hand around her throat and that she bit his hand to break his grip. Portable breath tests at the scene recorded Sullivan’s blood-alcohol level at .13, while his wife registered .04. Investigators said the blood pattern in the home supported their conclusion that Sullivan’s reported stabbing never happened, according to Villages-News.

Why A Helicopter Was Called

In Lake County, reports of possible stab wounds often draw a large, fast-moving response that can include aviation support. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office aviation unit, which operates under the callsign Eagle-1, is used for aerial searches and support in cases where someone might be badly injured or on the run.

According to the sheriff’s office, the aviation unit is tasked with scanning wide areas quickly, a role it played as deputies searched the Hammock Oaks neighborhood during the incident at the Sullivan home.

Investigation And Charges

Officers booked Sullivan into the Lake County Jail on counts including providing false information to law enforcement and battery on a person 65 years of age or older. Records show he was later released after posting a $3,500 bond, and the case is set to move forward in the Lake County court system.

Criminal charges remain allegations until proven in court.

Neighbors And Background

The Sullivans live in the Hammock Oaks development off Port Blue Way near The Villages, a growing area where real estate listings show multiple new-construction townhomes. Public records and local reporting indicate the couple bought a townhome in the neighborhood this year.
