On San Antonio's Southwest Side, what started as an ordinary day for a few Good Samaritans turned into a cruelty case that has stunned local animal advocates. In mid-February, they discovered two sealed plastic bins filled with kittens. Some of the animals were pulled out in time and rushed for emergency care, but several later died despite those efforts, according to shelter staff. San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) and national advocacy group Alley Cat Allies have now put up a joint reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Investigators believe the animals were likely abandoned overnight, and the case remains an active animal cruelty investigation.

As reported by the San Antonio Express-News, ACS posted on social media that "These kittens deserved better" and said the plastic totes were found in the 1100 block of Somerset Road on the Southwest Side. The agency urged anyone with information to call 311 and ask for an ACS cruelty investigator, stressing that even seemingly minor details could help move the case forward. At this point, ACS says no suspects have been positively identified.

Where the animals were found

In a press release shared by Alley Cat Allies, the group said the bins were discovered near an auto-parts store off Somerset Road and West Gerald Avenue. The cats had been taped inside two plastic totes. According to the group, Good Samaritans were able to unseal one tote in time and rush the surviving kittens to veterinary care, but the animals in the second tote were already deceased when opened.

"This act of heinous cruelty cannot go unpunished," Alley Cat Allies said in the release, announcing a reward "for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible." The organization noted that anyone found guilty could face the maximum penalties available under Texas felony animal cruelty statutes as investigators continue working the case.

How to report tips and legal consequences

People with information are asked to contact San Antonio Animal Care Services through 3-1-1 (or 210-207-6000) or by submitting a report online, according to the city's Animal Care Services information page. Under Texas law, cruelty to non-livestock animals is addressed in the state Penal Code and can result in misdemeanor or felony charges, with potential penalties that include fines and confinement, as outlined by the SPCA of Texas. ACS and Alley Cat Allies say rewards like this often help investigators identify suspects and build cases that can stand up in court.

Alley Cat Allies has rolled out similar rewards in San Antonio in the past, and advocates say the tactic has helped sharpen the focus of earlier cruelty investigations. For instance, the Express-News reported on a November 2025 case in which a reward was offered after security footage appeared to show a man strangling a kitten on the South Side.

For now, ACS and local advocates say their top priorities are caring for the surviving kittens and tracking down whoever left them sealed in those bins. They are leaning hard on the public for help, saying community tips will be crucial if they are going to hold anyone accountable.
