Horace Mann Middle School in Sheboygan abruptly canceled classes Friday after a biking accident on school property that district officials said resulted in the death of a community member. In a social media post sent to families early Friday, school leaders stressed there was never a threat to students or staff and said the 8th-grade award recognition ceremony and school dance scheduled for tonight would still go forward.
School Posts Statement And Schedule
In a message shared with families, district officials referred to a "tragic biking accident" that led to a community member's death and thanked families for their "incredible understanding, flexibility, and support," according to FOX6 News Milwaukee. The statement also noted that "at no time was there any threat to the school community," and FOX6 News Milwaukee reported that the details were shared in a social media post.
Medical Examiner And Police Responded
The Sheboygan County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed it was called to the scene, according to WISN. Police told television stations there was no threat to students and that the situation could not be resolved before the start of the school day, as NBC26 reported.
Events To Continue And District Follow-Up
Despite the closure, Horace Mann said the 8th-grade award recognition ceremony will begin at 7 p.m., with students allowed to arrive at 6:30 p.m., and the dance will conclude at 9:30 p.m., according to FOX6 News Milwaukee. The district shared its notice on the school's Facebook page and reported that no other district schools were affected, WBAY reported.
District officials said they will release additional information as it becomes available, according to WISN. This remains a developing story, and local stations said they are awaiting further updates from law enforcement and school leaders.
