Families hitting the swings at Tudor Park over the weekend had no idea that, just beyond the tree line, police were sealing off a grim discovery. On Sunday, May 10, a passerby walking through a wooded lot next to the Ozone Park playground spotted what appeared to be human skeletal remains and quickly called 911. Officers responded, cordoned off the area and summoned the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine who the person was and how they died.

What Police Said

According to the New York Post, the remains were discovered near the intersection of Sutter and North Conduit Avenues after a bystander came across the site and dialed 911. Police told the outlet the remains appeared to be skeletal, and that the medical examiner would be responsible for determining the person’s age, gender and cause of death.

Where It Happened

Tudor Park stretches along North Conduit Avenue and is usually known more for little league games than police tape. The park features a children’s playground along with baseball, basketball and handball courts, plus cricket fields that draw neighborhood teams and weekend warriors alike. The wooded section where the remains were found sits behind the recreational areas, removed from the main thoroughfare of park activity, according to Inclusive Rec.

Another Recent Discovery In Queens

This is not the only unsettling find in Queens in recent weeks. On April 7, officers in Jackson Heights discovered a badly decomposed body inside a doored-off Department of Transportation storage area beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway’s Exit 41 ramp. The condition of that body was reportedly so advanced that police could not immediately determine the person’s gender, PoliticsNY reported.

Investigation Underway

NYPD investigators are now processing the Tudor Park scene and have not released any identifying information about the remains, pending the medical examiner’s forensic work. Authorities told the New York Post the case remains active and that the medical examiner’s report will determine what steps investigators take next.
