Thursday evening in northwest Houston turned smoky in a hurry when a warehouse in the Fairbanks/Northwest Crossing area caught fire, sending a thick column of smoke over the industrial corridor and drawing a major response from city firefighters. The blaze was reported at about 7:22 p.m., and crews launched an aggressive interior attack while working to keep flames from jumping to neighboring buildings. Firefighters reported no injuries as they brought the situation under control.

Firefight at 8310 Castleford Street

According to the Houston Fire Department, units were dispatched to 8310 Castleford St. and arrived to find smoke coming from a two-story warehouse. HFD says 58 personnel from multiple stations, including Stations 75, 4, 5, 13, 50, 66, 77, 49, 67 and 57, plus HazMat and Rehab 42, attacked the fire, ventilated the roof and used large fans to clear smoke from the structure. Crews conducted a primary search inside while rotating through rehab as the blaze was brought under control.

Investigation underway

The Houston Fire Department said, "HFD arson investigators were requested to determine the cause and origin." The department noted that the cause remains under investigation while crews secure and examine the scene, and officials asked anyone with information or footage to contact the department's Public Information Office.

Why warehouse fires matter

Warehouse fires are notoriously tricky. Large open interiors and heavy fuel loads from stored materials can let flames move fast and burn hot, which makes these incidents costly and complex to control. The National Fire Protection Association found local fire departments responded to an average of 1,544 warehouse structure fires per year from 2020-2024, causing an annual average of two civilian deaths and 17 civilian injuries, and NFPA research highlights industrial equipment and stored paper or wood as common ignition sources. Those patterns underline the challenges crews face in large industrial fires like the one on Castleford Street.

What residents should expect next

Neighbors may see HFD units and investigators at the site for days as crews complete overhaul work and investigators continue to sort out the origin and cause. HFD's public information line is 832-394-6709, and the department can be reached at [email protected] for official updates. Property owners and nearby businesses are advised to check with insurers about cleanup and damage claims. City officials have not yet released an estimate of property loss while the investigation continues.
