Renton is about to get a new spot for lingering over tea and conversation. Shaah & Sheeko, a family-run Somali-inspired cafe, is moving from pop-ups to a permanent storefront in the city and hopes to open as soon as June. The space is set to feature Somali teas, lattes, pastries and savory dishes, all served in a room decorated with cultural fabrics and objects brought from Somalia.

From Pop-Ups To A Permanent Storefront

Shaah & Sheeko is under development at 16928 116th Ave SE in Renton and could open as early as June, according to WhatNow. The family behind the cafe - founder Ahlam Nur and her parents, Amaal Mohamed and Abdulaziz Hirsi - has been running pop-ups and community events that built steady demand for a permanent location. Nur told WhatNow that her parents left their jobs to help bring the cafe to life full time.

Founder Background And Community Roots

Nur says a 2021 trip to Mogadishu helped shape Shaah & Sheeko's concept and menu, and that serious health scares early in life pushed her to pursue the cafe dream sooner rather than later. The University of Washington's Foster School of Business recently profiled Nur, highlighting her community work and noting that Shaah & Sheeko is expanding from pop-ups into a permanent Renton storefront. The profile also pointed to Nur's role founding Al-Firdous Seattle.

What They Will Serve

The menu will center on Somali-inspired teas - shaah - alongside lattes, pastries and savory items that blend family recipes with familiar cafe-style preparations, WhatNow reports. Inside, fabrics, artwork and cooking utensils sourced from Somalia are planned to help the space feel like a cultural gathering room as much as a place to grab a drink.

Where Shaah & Sheeko Fits In Renton's Dining Scene

Shaah & Sheeko is arriving as Renton's food scene continues to diversify, joining long-running local spots like Boon Boona Coffee and recent newcomers that spotlight Yemeni and other East African cuisines. Coverage by Eater Seattle has noted a growing appetite for Yemeni and East African fare on the Eastside. By centering Somali tea and conversation, Shaah & Sheeko is positioning itself as a neighborhood meeting place as much as a cafe.

There is no firm day set for a public opening yet. The owners say final timing depends on wrapping up renovations and staffing, and they plan to announce a specific opening date once preparations are complete.
