A 35-year-old homeowner is in stable condition after being shot on his front doorstep late Saturday night in Southeast Houston, according to neighbors and police. The shooting unfolded around 10:40 p.m. in the 5300 block of El Buey Way, where multiple residents reported seeing a man running through the subdivision and calling 911 right after gunshots rang out.
What Police Say Happened
According to Click2Houston, Houston Police Department Lt. Pulido said an unknown man knocked on the home’s front door and opened fire as the homeowner answered. Using witness descriptions, officers located and detained a man a few blocks away, though no firearm has been recovered, the outlet reports. The homeowner was shot in the hip and hand, treated at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics, and then taken to a local hospital.
Part Of A Troubling Pattern
The shooting comes amid several recent homeowner-involved shootings in Houston this month, ratcheting up anxiety in some neighborhoods. Earlier this month, the Houston Chronicle reported that a man believed to be homeless was fatally shot after a confrontation with a homeowner in the 9600 block of Tidwell, and ABC13 also covered that May 14 case. Taken together, the incidents highlight how fast encounters at the front door can escalate and how investigators and prosecutors must weigh evidence carefully before filing any charges.
Investigation Ongoing
HPD has labeled the detained man a person of interest and turned the case over to its Major Assaults division for follow-up, Click2Houston reports. No charges have been announced, and detectives are canvassing the area for more witnesses and evidence. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS or reach HPD through its non-emergency channels.
