A Sunday night drive on San Antonio's West Side turned deadly when an SUV rolled over and killed its driver, according to police. The single-vehicle crash happened as the SUV headed north in the 800 block of SW 36th Street, where investigators say it lost control, hit a fence and a parked car, and then overturned. Emergency crews pronounced the woman dead at the scene, and authorities said she was the only person in the vehicle.
Police details and scene
Officers said the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, according to KSAT. The vehicle plowed into a fence and a parked car in a nearby driveway before rolling over. Photos published by KSAT show the SUV badly damaged at the scene. Police said the home on the property was not damaged.
Speed is a common factor in fatal crashes
Speeding continues to play an outsized role in deadly wrecks. In 2023, nearly 29% of U.S. motor-vehicle fatalities were speed-related, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Higher speeds make it easier for drivers to lose control and more likely that a crash will be lethal. The rollover comes amid ongoing West Side traffic safety concerns, including a March incident described as a West Side crosswalk horror that pushed local officials to demand upgrades.
Investigation ongoing
Police have not yet released the woman's name or said whether impairment is suspected, as reported by KSAT. The crash remains under investigation.
