Detroit started today on a crisp, clear note, with early temperatures hovering around 41°F and a steady north-northeast breeze. The city gets a mostly sunny, breezy afternoon with highs near 65°F, a solid window for outdoor plans before the weather turns. Rain and gusty winds are expected to return later in the week, with potential impacts tomorrow evening commutes and boating plans.
Afternoon And Tonight
Conditions stay sunny and mild today, with northeast winds of 9 to 13 mph and afternoon highs close to 65°F. Tonight, clouds increase a bit, and skies turn partly cloudy as temperatures slip into the upper 40s. East-northeast winds of 9 to 13 mph could gust up to about 22 mph.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit, the dry stretch holds through the day Friday before a system to the south sends moisture back into the region late Friday. The office’s National Weather Service marine forecast also highlights elevated winds and waves on Lake Erie.
Friday Night Into Saturday
Rain is expected to move tomorrow evening, then become steadier overnight into Saturday morning. Many spots around the region are on track to pick up roughly a half inch to an inch of rain. Atmospheric instability looks limited, so widespread severe storms are not anticipated, but scattered thunderstorms and gusty easterly winds are possible Saturday as temperatures climb into the upper 60s.
Plan on a slow, wet tomorrow night commute and a soggy Saturday start for early outdoor events, especially anything that cannot be moved under a tent or awning.
Boaters And Commuters
Boaters will want to pay close attention. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect on Lake Erie from 4 p.m. today through 10 a.m. Saturday for the Michigan waters from the Detroit River to North Cape. Gusts approaching 30 mph at times could kick up rougher conditions on the lake and make towing, trailering, and driving high-profile vehicles trickier from tomorrow night into Saturday.
If you have to head out on the water, use a more sheltered harbor if possible and double-check conditions before you leave shore.
Plan Ahead
Take advantage of today’s sunshine to button things up at home. Bring in lightweight patio furniture and potted plants before Friday evening, and secure anything that tends to catch the wind. Keep an umbrella and a light jacket handy for tomorrow night, and build in some extra time for the evening drive.
