A man was killed Saturday when a Chevrolet Tahoe crashed and flipped onto its side on Gannon Avenue South near Ardmore Avenue in Staten Island’s Meiers Corner, leaving a trail of wreckage along the residential block.
First responders arrived to find the SUV on its side and a man suffering severe head trauma; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash also damaged several parked cars and a stone fence along the street.
According to the New York Daily News, the Tahoe first slammed into a parked, unoccupied Lincoln Navigator and at least one other vehicle, forcing the Lincoln up onto the sidewalk and into a stone fence. Police told the outlet that no other people were reported injured.
Investigation underway
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad responded to the scene to figure out what caused the deadly rollover, police said. Detectives canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage while investigators examined the crumpled vehicles and tow crews worked to clear the block.
Why rollovers are especially dangerous
Rollover crashes are among the most lethal types of collisions, especially when a single vehicle "trips" over a curb or strikes a fixed object. Data from NHTSA show that rollovers account for a disproportionate share of traffic deaths and frequently lead to severe head and neck injuries.
What comes next
Investigators had not released the victim’s name or said whether speed, impairment or a mechanical issue might have been factors, according to the New York Daily News. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad as detectives work to reconstruct the moments leading up to the crash.
There were no immediate reports of arrests, and the investigation remains active. Officials said additional details will be released when they become available.
