Authorities say a violent late-September home invasion in Tampa has now turned into a potential life-sentence case. Derrick Speights Jr., 29, of Tampa, is facing a long list of felony charges after prosecutors say he broke into a woman's home, beat and sexually battered her at gunpoint, and left her hospitalized. Investigators report that DNA evidence tied Speights to the assault, and he is currently jailed as state prosecutors prepare a case that could result in multiple life terms.
Prosecutors' account
According to the Florida Attorney General's Office, the case began on Sept. 28, 2025, when Speights allegedly responded to an online escort ad and went to the victim's home armed with a handgun. Once inside, prosecutors say he repeatedly assaulted and sexually battered her, then stole her phone, house keys, cash and vehicle before leaving. DNA collected during the investigation allegedly matched Speights. Attorney General James Uthmeier stated, "The victim in this case fought through what could have been her last breath, and our prosecutors will fight to bring justice in court."
Charges and court records
Court calendars from the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit show Speights facing ten felony counts - including armed burglary of a dwelling, sexual battery with great bodily harm and a deadly weapon, home-invasion robbery, aggravated battery and felon-in-possession charges - under case number 26-CF-004965-A. As detailed in court records from the Hillsborough Clerk of the Circuit Court, Speights is listed as in custody, and the offense date is recorded as Sept. 28, 2025.
Arrest, detention and victim status
Prosecutors say Speights was arrested earlier this year on a warrant and is being held without bond at the county jail. As reported by WFLA, the victim spent two days in the hospital following the attack, and her vehicle was found abandoned about a week later. Investigators also allege that roughly $200 was taken from her purse during the incident.
What comes next
The case is set to be prosecuted by Special Counsel Rita Peters on behalf of the Attorney General's Office, which says the sexual-battery charge has been filed as a life felony and that, if convicted as charged, Speights faces multiple life sentences. As outlined by the Florida Attorney General's Office, the investigation involved both the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Tampa Police Department. A pretrial-detention hearing is scheduled in circuit court to address the state's request to keep Speights held pending trial.
