A teenage driver was shot while behind the wheel last night near Palmer Park on Detroit's north side, according to police. The teen, whose age has not been released, was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. Investigators say someone in another vehicle pulled alongside the teen's car and opened fire, then took off. No arrests have been announced. The shooting comes on the heels of recent large gatherings of teenagers in and around Palmer Park and downtown that have already put the area on edge.
What police say
According to CBS News Detroit, the shooting happened around 5:59 p.m. in the area of Woodward and West Hildale avenues. Police told the outlet that an unknown person in another vehicle pulled alongside the teen's car and fired multiple shots. The victim was transported to a hospital and, as of last night, was listed in stable condition. Police said the investigation remains active.
Context: Teen gatherings and detentions
The incident lands in the middle of a growing debate over so-called "teen takeovers" that have drawn heavy police attention. WDET reports that police detained 109 juveniles across two large gatherings last Sunday, including 49 at Palmer Park and roughly 60 downtown, almost all for curfew violations. City leaders have been arguing over how to balance a tougher enforcement posture with providing supervised spaces for young people during warm-weather weekends.
Police response and curfews
Detroit police say they have increased patrols around downtown and other high-traffic public spaces following recent incidents. Chief Todd Bettison told WXYZ that officers detained more than 60 juveniles at one downtown gathering and that the department plans to "hold parents accountable" while stepping up enforcement of existing curfews. Bettison reminded residents that curfews are 10 p.m. for those 15 and under and 11 p.m. for 16- and 17-year-olds.
Investigation ongoing
Investigators are still working the case and have not released details on suspects or arrests, according to CBS News Detroit. Local coverage says the episode has intensified conversations about policing and youth programming, with officials looking for ways to move large teen gatherings into supervised, sanctioned spaces, WDET reported.
