An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning in a collision at the intersection of Dave Lyle Boulevard and Mount Gallant Road in Rock Hill. Emergency crews pronounced the rider dead at the scene, according to investigators.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m., when police say a Harley-Davidson ridden by the teen struck a GMC Yukon that was making a left turn. According to preliminary findings reported by WSOC TV, investigators believe the Yukon failed to yield the right-of-way. The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Yukon driver was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn.
Investigation Underway
"According to preliminary findings, the motorcyclist was traveling west on Dave Lyle Boulevard and had a green light," investigators said, as reported by WSOC TV. Rock Hill Police Department's Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is leading the investigation. Police say the probe remains ongoing and that more details will be released as they become available.
Dangerous Corridor
Dave Lyle Boulevard and nearby Mount Gallant Road form a heavy commercial and commuter corridor where left-turn conflicts and busy traffic have contributed to serious collisions in the past. Local reporting and transportation plans have flagged stretches of Dave Lyle as high-volume and in need of attention, with sections targeted for roadwork and upgrades. As detailed by Herald-Online, officials have prioritized improvements along parts of Dave Lyle to address congestion and pavement wear.
Legal note
The Yukon driver received a traffic citation for failure to yield while making a left turn. Prosecutors could review the case if the completed investigation suggests additional charges are warranted. The Rock Hill Police Department said it will release further information once its reconstruction team finishes the investigation.
