A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed on Cleveland’s East Side on Saturday night, according to emergency personnel, pulling police and homicide detectives into yet another case involving a teenager. Officers responded to the scene as neighbors and families tried to process the sudden violence.
According to WKYC, Cleveland EMS officials said the teen was pronounced dead at the scene after the shooting. News 5 Cleveland places the incident near the basketball courts at the Lonnie Burten Recreation Center on the 2500 block of East 46th Street and reports officers initially found the teen with a chest wound, took him to MetroHealth, and that he later died there. Early accounts differ on whether the victim died at the scene or after transport.
Rec center has seen violence before
Court records and earlier reporting show the Burton Center and surrounding blocks have been the site of deadly shootings in past years. A 2021 case tied to a shooting outside the center led to juvenile charges, as WOIO reported. Residents and advocates have for years called for stronger security and more robust programming around municipal rec centers to keep young people safe, a theme that surfaces repeatedly in local coverage of neighborhood violence.
Police ask for tips
Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Cleveland police at 216-623-5464 or provide anonymous tips to Crimestoppers at 216-25-CRIME; a reward of up to $5,000 may be available, News 5 Cleveland reports. There were no immediate reports of arrests, and police say the investigation is ongoing, according to initial dispatch and EMS accounts reported by WKYC.
