A teenage boy was shot last night in downtown Detroit near Farmer Street, East Grand River Avenue, and Library Street. He was taken to a hospital, and police detained another teenager at the scene. Officers also recovered a firearm, but authorities have not said what led up to the shooting.
According to ClickOnDetroit, officers at the scene confirmed both the arrest and the recovered weapon while investigators processed the area. The outlet reports that police have not released any details about the victim’s condition or what might have sparked the gunfire.
Downtown takeovers and patrols
The shooting comes amid a recent stretch of large teen gatherings in downtown Detroit that has already led to stepped-up patrols and outreach from city officials. As WJR reports, Detroit police increased patrols downtown after several so-called “teen takeover” events. WXYZ notes that Mayor Mary Sheffield has been working with organizers to move those meetups into safer, sanctioned gathering spaces.
Investigation underway
Detroit police say detectives are investigating the downtown shooting and have not disclosed a motive or any suspect description, according to ClickOnDetroit. Anyone with information can submit tips through Detroit’s Rewards TV program or Crime Stoppers; FOX 2 Detroit notes that people can also call 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
