A kindergarten graduation ceremony at Queen of Apostles School in Toledo took a chaotic turn Thursday morning when a dispute over seating among adults erupted into a full-on brawl. One adult was hospitalized, and another was taken into custody, while children were in a different part of the building getting ready for what was supposed to be a big day.
Police were called to the school at about 8:45 a.m., and 28-year-old Jessica Anderson was arrested and booked into the Lucas County jail on a charge of felonious assault, according to The Blade. A 26-year-old woman suffered a head wound and was taken to a local hospital, the outlet reported.
Video Shows Adults Swinging in School Gym
Viewer video shared by local stations shows a crowd of adults shoving and swinging near the gym bleachers while others yell in the background. Broadcasters warned that the clip includes explicit language. FOX19 published the video, which has since circulated among other area outlets.
School Officials Say Kids Were Never in Harm's Way
Central City Ministries, which operates Queen of Apostles, later posted on social media to thank police for their quick response and to stress that students were safe and the last day of school carried on as normal, according to Cleveland.com. School leaders said the graduation ceremony itself was postponed while authorities sort out what happened.
Felonious Assault Charge Filed
According to police, Anderson faces a felonious assault charge in connection with the fight, and investigators have not yet said whether anyone else might be arrested, The Blade reported. Court records or comments from prosecutors were not immediately available, and the investigation remains active.
Part of a Troubling Local Trend
The incident adds to a string of confrontations at school events in the region this year. A February on-court brawl at Rogers High School led to an arrest and renewed debate over security at games, according to 13abc/WTVG. In response, school leaders and districts have been emphasizing safety plans and stricter enforcement of conduct rules for adults at student events.
Witness Says He Was Sucker-Punched
Craig Mays told WTVG he tried to break up the dispute and was "sucker-punched" during the scuffle. Police have asked anyone with video or information to contact investigators as they work to piece together how a kindergarten milestone devolved into a gym-floor melee.
