
A routine training flight turned tense at Westchester County Airport in West Harrison on Monday afternoon when a small Cessna flipped after takeoff, leaving two people with minor injuries and the aircraft upside down on airport property.
What Happened
The Federal Aviation Administration told flipped over while taking off that a Cessna 172S overturned while departing the airport at about 1:50 p.m. According to the station, two people were on board and both reported minor injuries.
Plane Identified
Online registration listings show the aircraft carried tail number N5114Z and list the model as a Cessna 172S, according to Aircraft‑Data. Recent flight‑tracking information for that tail number reflects movements at White Plains (HPN), per Flightradar24.
Passengers and Airport Status
County Communications Director Catherine Cioffi told Daily Voice the airplane was on a flight‑school training sortie when it overturned. Officials said both people aboard suffered minor injuries, and the main runway stayed open while emergency crews responded and secured the scene.
Investigation
According to the FAA, the agency will investigate the incident and typically releases preliminary findings after initial on‑scene work is complete. The National Transportation Safety Board also investigates civil aviation accidents and issues safety recommendations when warranted, per the NTSB.
