A 23-year-old San Antonio man was arrested Wednesday after weeks of online conversations with someone he thought was a 16-year-old, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say the chats escalated into explicit messages and sexual offers, and deputies set up a face-to-face meetup that ended with the suspect in cuffs. Authorities say they seized electronic devices and sexual materials, and detectives are still working through the evidence.
How investigators say the sting unfolded
As reported by KENS5, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect spent weeks messaging an undercover agent who was posing as a 16-year-old boy, before deputies arranged a meeting in the 2200 block of Fredericksburg Road. According to the outlet, deputies spotted the man walking in the area and arrested him without further incident. Investigators allege the online conversations included indecent offers and explicit photographs, and deputies say they recovered sexual materials from the man’s backpack while also seizing phones and other devices for analysis.
Sheriff Javier Salazar told reporters he does “not believe this is the first time” the man has tried to contact minors online and warned that “Bexar County is not the place to be doing this sort of stuff,” according to KENS5. Salazar said the BCSO Human Exploitation Unit is teaming up with the U.S. Secret Service as detectives dig through digital records for additional leads. Officials also urged anyone with information to call the sheriff’s tip line at 210-335-6000, as reported by KSAT.
Part of a broader enforcement push
The arrest is one in a string of undercover operations the Human Exploitation Unit has been running this spring to target people accused of soliciting minors online. The San Antonio Express-News recently reported on the arrest of a 32-year-old man who investigators say had been chatting with multiple undercover accounts and arranged to meet a supposed 16-year-old at a restaurant on Potranco Road. Local coverage, including a report on an alleged teen sex sting at Potranco eatery, has highlighted the sheriff’s recent briefings and repeated law enforcement’s reminder that parents should keep a close eye on their kids’ online contacts.
What the charge means
Authorities say the suspect is facing online solicitation charges under Texas law, which makes it a crime to knowingly solicit a minor to meet for sexual conduct or to send sexually explicit material to someone the defendant believes is under 17. Texas Penal Code §33.021 allows prosecutors to pursue felony counts in cases where there is alleged intent to meet a minor for sex, and related case law guides how those charges are applied, according to Justia. Investigators typically complete digital forensics before formal charges are filed, and in this case officials are again asking anyone with tips to contact the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office tip line.
