An early-morning blaze ripped through one unit of a one-story duplex at 1140 E Vernon Ave in Central-Alameda on Friday, prompting a fast response from Los Angeles firefighters and a medical evaluation for a man found at the scene.
Fire crews got water on the flames quickly and declared a knockdown shortly after arriving, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Arson investigators were requested while multiple LAFD engines and a rescue company stayed on site to complete overhaul. An approximately 40-year-old man was located and medically evaluated by Rescue 14, officials said.
LAFD first flagged the incident on X and later logged the call as INC#0059 on its online alerts system. According to the LAFD alerts page, Task Force 21 initially reported light smoke from what was thought to be a one-story commercial building before the incident commander clarified it was “a one story duplex with 1 unit involved.” Crews formally declared knockdown at 01:16 a.m., and Rescue 14 handled the medical evaluation of the approximately 40-year-old male found on scene.

Vernon Avenue Fire History
The stretch of East Vernon has seen its share of fire activity. In January 2025, a January 2025 strip-mall blaze drew more than 80 firefighters and triggered an extended investigation, highlighting how quickly resources can be surged into the Central-Alameda area when things go sideways.
Investigation Underway
The cause of Friday’s duplex fire remains under investigation. LAFD’s incident entry notes that “BC13 as Vernon IC requested arson,” and the LAFD alerts page lists the companies assigned to INC#0059, confirming that crews achieved knockdown in the early morning hours. Officials have not released additional information on the man’s condition or whether anyone was displaced from the affected unit.
