Anyone heading to or from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport this weekend is in for a bit of a maze. A key stretch of the Mitchell Interchange is going offline for resurfacing, cutting off a major access route to the terminal and forcing drivers onto city streets instead.
What will be closed
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the shutdown is part of a broader resurfacing and improvement project and includes an extended 54-hour closure of the southbound collector-distributor lanes between Layton Avenue and College Avenue. The larger Mitchell Interchange project runs through fall 2026 and is built around weekend and overnight lane closures to keep daytime traffic impacts in check.
Ramps and lanes impacted
As reported by FOX6 News Milwaukee, crews will shut the I-41/94 southbound collector-distributor lanes between Layton and College and close every ramp feeding into them from 9 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Monday. That includes the I-43 southbound system ramp to the collector-distributor lanes, the I-41/94 southbound on-ramp from Layton Avenue, the on- and off-ramps to WIS-119 (the Airport Spur), and the off-ramp to College Avenue.
How to get to Mitchell Airport
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is urging southbound drivers headed for the airport to exit at Layton Avenue, head east on Layton, then turn south on Howell Avenue to reach the terminal. I-894 eastbound drivers are advised to exit at 27th Street, go south to Layton, then continue south on Howell.
Leaving the airport will take a similar detoured path. Drivers should use Howell Avenue and then turn west on College Avenue to reach the I-41/94 southbound on-ramp, according to the agency’s travel guidance.
Plan ahead
Access to the airport from I-94/41 northbound will remain open during the work, FOX6 noted. Even so, travelers should budget extra time to catch flights, expect slower trips, and consider alternate routes or public transit. Keeping an eye on traffic apps and local traffic reports would not be the worst idea this weekend.
Why this closure matters
This is just one in a series of extended weekend shutdowns tied to the resurfacing push, as earlier coverage of the project has spelled out. The goal is to keep the noisiest, messiest work tucked into nights and weekends so weekday commuters are not completely thrown off.
Local TV coverage has highlighted the pattern of weekend closures; TMJ4 previously reported similar lane and ramp shutdowns during earlier stages of the Mitchell Interchange project.
