Wilberforce University is mourning the death of student Savanna Jones, as law enforcement opens an investigation and campus leaders urge the community to lean on support services while answers remain scarce.
University statement and investigation
In a letter shared on social media, President Vann R. Newkirk called Jones "a valued member of our community, and her presence mattered," extending condolences to her family, friends and classmates, as reported by CBS Pittsburgh. The university confirmed Thursday that law enforcement is investigating her death and said no additional details would be released for now in order to preserve the integrity of that work.
Campus supports and context
While students wait for more information, the university is steering the campus toward counseling and wellness resources. The administration directed students, faculty and staff to Health & Counseling and other student support offices, with contact information and services listed on the school's site, Wilberforce University. The school, which describes itself as "the nation's oldest private HBCU still owned and operated by African Americans," serves a rural campus community in Greene County, east of Dayton.
What officials are releasing
Officials have not released the cause of death or said whether foul play is suspected. The university has been clear that public updates will be limited while investigators do their work, according to CBS Pittsburgh. For now, the official word is that the case is in the hands of law enforcement and that the school is focused on supporting its students.
How to get help
Students in need of immediate support can reach out to the Division of Student Engagement and Success as well as Health & Counseling Services, both listed on the university website. For general campus assistance, the university's main line is (937) 376-2911, as listed by the school.
