A Washington, D.C. man is headed to prison after admitting he caused a deadly wrong-way crash on Sandy Spring Road that killed a Columbia resident. On May 13, a judge sentenced 30-year-old Jose Badell-Uzcategui to seven years behind bars, followed by five years of supervised probation, for the Aug. 6, 2025 collision. The early-morning crash involved a silver SUV traveling against traffic that slammed into another vehicle head-on. The other driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and relatives, neighbors and prosecutors have called the case a stark reminder of what can happen when intoxication and high speed mix on local roads.
Sentence, Plea and What Prosecutors Said
Badell-Uzcategui pleaded guilty on Jan. 28 to one count of manslaughter by motor vehicle and returned to court on May 13 for sentencing, according to Montgomery Community Media. Prosecutors told the court he was intoxicated and driving between 65 and 68 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone before impact. Citing those aggravating factors, the judge imposed a punishment that went above Maryland’s standard sentencing guidelines. The term includes incarceration followed by supervised probation to keep tabs on Badell-Uzcategui after his release.
Crash Details From the Initial Investigation
In the immediate aftermath of the wreck, witnesses reported seeing a silver 2024 Honda CR-V heading east in the westbound lanes of Sandy Spring Road near McKnew Road. Drivers tried to warn the wrong-way SUV by flashing headlights and leaning on their horns before the inevitable head-on crash, as first reported by Daily Voice. The other vehicle, a red 2007 Honda CR-V driven by 30-year-old Jazz Andrew Taylor of Columbia, was traveling west legally when it was struck. Despite lifesaving efforts, Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prosecutor's Statement
State’s Attorney John McCarthy, quoted in local coverage, said, "We express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Jazz Taylor," and emphasized that the sentence topped the guidelines because Badell-Uzcategui was intoxicated, speeding and driving the wrong way, according to Montgomery Community Media. Prosecutors framed the outcome as a measure of accountability for conduct that put every driver on that stretch of road in serious danger.
Local Safety Context
The deadly crash has refocused attention on safety issues along MD-198/Sandy Spring Road. County planning documents highlight a MD 198 Sidewalk Improvements project running between Dino Drive and McKnew Road, aimed at improving pedestrian access and ADA connectivity in the Burtonsville business district. Funding and design work for plugging sidewalk gaps along this part of Sandy Spring Road appear in the county’s capital improvement plan, according to Montgomery County's CIP.
With the guilty plea and sentencing, the criminal case is now closed in circuit court. But county investigators and safety planners continue to point to engineering changes, education and enforcement as key pieces of a broader effort to keep similar tragedies from playing out on the same stretch of road. Earlier coverage advised anyone with information about the original crash to reach out to the Montgomery County Collision Reconstruction Unit, which handled the investigation.
