A late-night bike stop in Yuba City turned into a brief chase and a gun hunt, ending when a police K9 sniffed out a loaded 9mm handgun that officers say a fleeing rider ditched in a residential yard. Police booked a 33-year-old man into the Sutter County Jail on multiple weapons-related allegations, and no injuries were reported. The department later shared photos and surveillance stills from the incident on its Facebook page.
In a Facebook recap from the Yuba City Police Department, night-shift officers said they tried to stop a bicyclist last Friday for traffic violations. Instead of pulling over, the rider reportedly pedaled away, leading officers on a short pursuit that ended when he rode into the driveway of a home in the 700 block of Orange Street. Surveillance video, according to the post, shows the rider tossing a loaded handgun just moments before surrendering. K9 Rook was then brought in to search the property and ultimately found the firearm wedged between two detached sheds. The department identified the suspect as 33-year-old Garrett Wade Martin and said he was booked on allegations that include carrying a loaded firearm in public, resisting or delaying officers, and grand theft of a firearm, along with an outstanding felony warrant.
How the Chase Ended
What started as a routine traffic stop attempt quickly shifted gears when the bicyclist refused to pull over, according to the department’s photos and post. The brief pursuit wrapped up as the rider pulled into a driveway and surrendered without further incident. Officers say the real work then fell to the K9 team, which combed the yard until Rook located the discarded handgun. The department made the surveillance stills and scene photos public to support the ongoing investigation.
