Genesee neighbors woke up this week to something they have been hearing about for decades: a brand-new, two-lane emergency access road that finally gives the foothills community a southern exit to Colorado Highway 74. The gated, unpaved road is designed as a backup escape route for residents and a way in for firefighters if Interstate 70 is blocked during a wildfire.
According to CBS News Colorado, the route quietly opened this week, arriving roughly 20 years after fire planners first warned that Genesee could face a dangerous traffic jam during a fast-moving evacuation. Footage from the station shows crews working along the new corridor and local officials stressing that it is reserved strictly for emergencies, not for shaving a few minutes off the morning commute.
How the Route Was Financed and Built
As detailed by the Genesee Foundation, voters signed off on construction in a special election held on May 6, 2025, and the Genesee Fire Protection District covered the cost through bonds. Planners put the project price tag at about $8 million.
Engineers designed the corridor as a roughly 24-foot-wide natural-surface road, with two 9-foot travel lanes and 3-foot shoulders. The dimensions are meant to be wide enough for both fire engines and passenger vehicles to move through during an emergency.
How and When It Will Be Used
Genesee Fire Rescue says the new route will be tightly controlled, with gates at both ends, and it will stay closed to regular traffic. In an online update, Genesee Fire Rescue explains that the Jefferson County Sheriff will manage the exit to Highway 74 when the road is activated in an emergency. The corridor will also see limited use for maintenance and occasional training drills.
Why It Matters to Foothills Residents
The district's Community Wildfire Protection Plan, first released in 2008 and updated in 2021, flagged the absence of a southern escape route as a serious weak point. The plan warned that, under existing conditions, evacuations for much of Genesee could take roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.
Planners say the new Emergency Access Route is meant to cut those evacuation times and give fire crews another way to position themselves to defend the community. The goal is straightforward: improve the odds that people and homes can survive when a wildfire threatens the foothills.
Residents are urged to stay enrolled in official alert systems, review evacuation maps, and study preparedness information available on the Genesee Fire Rescue website.
