A 58-year-old Apollo man is behind bars after state police say he pulled up in a black Jeep on May 28 and tried to lure a 4-year-old into his vehicle on a quiet Kiskiminetas Township street in Armstrong County. The incident happened on Pine Circle, where troopers say the driver offered the child money. The youngster was not harmed, and sharp-eyed neighbors who saw something off quickly called it in.
Pennsylvania State Police from the Kittanning barracks were dispatched to Pine Circle for a reported child-luring attempt and later identified the driver as Walter Mitchell, 58, of Apollo, according to WTAE. Investigators say neighbors recognized Mitchell from an earlier incident in the same area that had already prompted 911 calls.
Statewide Alerts And Similar Cases
This is not the only case putting parents on edge this spring. Pennsylvania State Police have issued similar alerts in other parts of the state, leaning heavily on neighborhood tips and home-surveillance video to piece together what happened, as reported by CBS Philadelphia. In an April incident in Glen Mills, troopers urged residents to comb through camera footage and contact investigators with any leads.
Arrest And Investigation
Troopers say Mitchell was taken into custody on June 1 and is being held while investigators chase down additional leads, although formal charges have not yet been publicly listed, per WTAE. Authorities are asking anyone who lives near Pine Circle and has information or video from the area to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Kittanning station.
What Parents Should Know
Police are reminding parents to go over the basics with young children: never take money, gifts, or rides from strangers, and tell a trusted adult right away if someone approaches them. Investigators say community tips and home security footage often make or break these cases, and they are urging anyone who has seen something or recorded something suspicious to come forward.
