A 15-year-old from Bedford Heights drowned Thursday afternoon in a quarry lake in Aurora, according to local authorities, turning a quiet stretch of Treat Road into the scene of a frantic water rescue effort.
First responders rushed to the area after reports of a person in the water. Rescue divers entered the quarry and later located the teen, who was found about 10 feet underwater and roughly 25 feet from shore. The body was transported to the Portage County coroner, and officials say the death is under investigation.
As reported by Fox 8, Aurora fire crews were called to the 300 block of Treat Road just after 4 p.m. The Portage County water rescue team and dive crews joined the search in the quarry, and the teen’s remains were ultimately recovered and taken to the Portage County coroner’s office. Authorities have not yet released additional details about what led up to the drowning.
Rescue Response
Aurora’s Fire & EMS handles initial emergency responses inside city limits and brings in county or regional specialty teams when an incident calls for underwater search and recovery. According to Aurora Fire & EMS, local resources work in tandem with Portage County units to manage dive operations, with county listings outlining the emergency-management resources that can be tapped during multi-agency responses.
Why Quarries Are Dangerous
Quarry lakes may look calm on the surface, but they often conceal steep drop-offs, sudden changes in depth, cold temperatures, and hidden debris that can turn a swim into an emergency in seconds. The Centers for Disease Control notes that drowning can be silent and incredibly fast, especially in natural bodies of water where visibility and footing are unpredictable. Guidance from the CDC highlights the heightened risks in places like lakes, rivers, and quarries.
Northeast Ohio has seen similar tragedies before. In 2021, Cleveland 19 reported on another teen who drowned in a quarry, underscoring how quickly these deep, cold waters can become deadly.
Officials have not yet released the Bedford Heights teen’s name. The Portage County coroner’s office will conduct an examination and release findings when they are available. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact Aurora police or Portage County authorities; Portage County maintains an online directory with contact information for county offices.
