This morning (Monday, June 29) Baltimore woke up to patchy fog and muggy air, with temperatures sitting in the low 70s and dewpoints near 70°F. Skies are expected to turn mostly sunny and afternoon highs should land near 90°F, setting the stage for a much hotter stretch as the week wears on.
Afternoons Heat Up
Once the fog burns off after sunrise, the city should see a bright, warm afternoon with light east-southeast breezes and highs around 90°F. Tuesday is on track to play out much the same, warm and humid again with highs near 90°F and sticky overnights holding in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
Midweek Heat Risk
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, the real heat kicks in midweek. Forecasters expect highs near 100°F on Wednesday, July 1, then climbing into the low 100s on Thursday, July 2, and Friday. Heat indices could run between 100°F and 110°F across lower elevations, and the agency says heat advisories or warnings will likely be needed. Late in the week, thunderstorms may return Friday into the Independence Day weekend, with a few storms possibly turning strong.
Cooling Centers And Safety
Baltimore opens designated cooling centers when a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert is declared, and the city lists locations and hours for activated sites. See the Baltimore City Health Department for cooling center information, which includes examples such as Oliver Senior Center at 1700 N. Gay Street and Sandtown-Winchester Senior Center at 1601 Baker Street. Residents are urged to take basic precautions, including drinking plenty of water, moving strenuous outdoor work to the morning or evening, checking in on neighbors who do not have air conditioning, and calling 911 if anyone shows signs of heat stroke.
