Maui police and The Home Depot’s loss-prevention team spent two days quietly patrolling the aisles in a coordinated retail theft crackdown that authorities dubbed "Operation Barcode Bandits." The June 9 and 10 sweep ended with multiple arrests, including five people accused of shoplifting along with several felony drug and property cases. Plainclothes officers worked inside the store alongside retailer staff in what police described as a targeted response to a rise in retail theft on the island.

According to Maui Now, the operation "resulted in the arrest and charging of five individuals for shoplifting-related offenses" and also produced five felony drug arrests along with other felony charges. Police said the people arrested came from Kīhei, Pāʻia, Wailuku, Haʻikū and Kahului. The department noted it no longer routinely releases mug shots or other identifying details because of a Ninth Circuit ruling. "By working closely with local businesses and community stakeholders, we can identify problems, develop effective solutions, and hold offenders accountable," police said in the statement quoted by Maui Now.

How the sting worked

Plainclothes officers from the Maui Police Department’s Community Policing Unit, Vice Division, Traffic Section and Criminal Investigation Division teamed up with Home Depot Loss Prevention agents to spot and detain suspected shoplifters inside the store, the department said in its release, as reported by Maui Now. The Maui County Prosecutor’s Office joined the operation, which police described as a coordinated push to clamp down on repeat offenders who hit multiple businesses across the island.

Retail theft and organized crime

Retailers around the country have been sounding the alarm about organized retail crime, and The Home Depot says it has stepped up loss-prevention efforts and law enforcement partnerships to counter coordinated theft and resale networks, according to The Home Depot. Previous reporting has detailed large theft rings accused of targeting dozens of Home Depot locations across Southern California, highlighting how what looks like a simple store theft can be part of a much bigger multi-jurisdictional operation, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Why it matters here

Local shop owners and regular customers often say theft eats into already tight margins, drives up prices and pulls staff away from helping paying customers. Police framed Operation Barcode Bandits as an attempt to protect both neighborhood commerce and community safety. The department is urging residents and businesses to flag repeat offenders and report suspicious behavior, and it posts ongoing enforcement updates on its News & Events page.

Legal notes

All arrests from the two-day sweep have been forwarded to the Maui County Prosecutor’s Office for charging decisions. As with every case, those arrested are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. Police said they will seek charges through prosecutors where appropriate while trying to balance public safety needs with privacy concerns.
