An NYPD officer was shot early Friday while responding to a barricaded person inside a Bedford-Stuyvesant building, leaving three people injured and a normally busy block frozen behind police tape, officials said. The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, while two other people were treated, one for serious injuries and another for minor injuries, as emergency crews flooded the street.
Firefighters said they were called to 190 Kosciusko Street at about 6:30 a.m., where they found three people hurt: the officer, who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, along with one person in serious condition and another with minor injuries, according to CBS News. The NYPD urged the public to steer clear of the area while investigators worked the scene, the outlet reported.
Scene on Kosciusko Street
Officers and detectives threw up perimeters around the block as EMS crews treated the wounded and rushed them to hospitals. As described on the NYPD website, incidents involving barricaded individuals typically trigger a coordinated tactical response that includes tight perimeter control and meticulous evidence collection, all of which played out along the usually bustling Bed-Stuy stretch.
Investigation Underway
Police had not released any information about a suspect or possible motive as of Friday morning. Investigators are still piecing together what led to the barricade situation and the gunfire, according to CBS News. Hoodline will update this report when city agencies or the NYPD publish additional details.
