A bright, easygoing Saturday at Westwood Recreation Center on June 20 turned jarringly somber when a human body was found near the playground and athletic fields, transforming part of the park into an active LAPD investigation. Witnesses said families, kids and dog-walkers kept moving through other parts of the grounds even as officers taped off the area. By late afternoon, authorities had not released the victim’s name or a cause of death.
According to the New York Post, officers quickly set up a perimeter around the scene at the Westwood Recreation Center and covered the body while investigators worked. The Post reported that the Los Angeles Police Department had no additional information to share at the time, and that inquiries to the county coroner went unanswered. Park staff and neighbors told reporters that the scene was plainly visible to many people using the park.
Park-goers and witness accounts
"It was a beautiful day and everyone seemed to be enjoying the park," one witness told the New York Post, describing the surreal contrast between the relaxed weekend crowd and the cordoned-off crime scene. Another person quoted by the Post said he supported Spencer Pratt and "hardline" policies to clear encampments, a comment that underscored how sharply divided Angelenos remain over how to handle visible homelessness.
Homeless deaths remain high across L.A. County
The Westwood discovery comes against a bleak countywide backdrop. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 2,208 deaths among people experiencing homelessness in 2024, a slight drop from 2023 but still averaging about six deaths every day. Drug overdose was identified as the leading cause, and the department warned that recent progress could be at risk if funding is cut, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Westwood Recreation Center's role in the neighborhood
The Westwood Recreation Center, located at 1350 Sepulveda Blvd., is a heavily used neighborhood hub that has previously served as an emergency shelter and drawn scrutiny over nearby encampments and sanitation complaints, according to local reporting. With its playgrounds, sports fields and community programs, incidents there are often highly visible to neighbors and nearby UCLA students, adding to the sense of unease when serious tragedies unfold, per the Daily Bruin.
What officials say and next steps
LAPD investigators are handling the case, while the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner will determine the person’s identity and cause of death. Officials have not released additional details. Anyone with information that could help the investigation is urged to contact law enforcement as the case moves forward.
