A routine traffic stop in Burbank ended with a local man in handcuffs Monday after detectives spotted a luxury sedan that had been reported stolen from the city’s CarMax location. The driver, identified by law enforcement as 35-year-old Franko Ariel, was taken into custody and remains booked on multiple allegations.
Detectives say the vehicle, a 2022 Lexus E350, was reported missing from the CarMax lot and later tracked down by investigators, who pulled it over and detained the driver, according to NBC Los Angeles. Authorities told the station that someone used fake information and identification to take possession of the car. Officers say Ariel was carrying credit cards and identification that did not belong to him and was arrested on suspicion of several crimes.
Burbank Police context
The Burbank Police Department's public "by the numbers" summary lists hundreds of recovered vehicles in recent tallies and highlights vehicle recovery work as a recurring part of investigations. The department asks the public to submit tips online or call its non-emergency line and posts daily arrest logs and news releases with updates on active cases.
Where the theft was reported
The theft was reported at the CarMax in Burbank, where the retailer’s local listing places the store at 1000 S. Flower St. Authorities say the 2022 Lexus had been on the lot before it was reported missing and later located by detectives during a traffic stop.
Charges and next steps
Police say Ariel was booked on suspicion of felony possession of a stolen vehicle, acquiring or possessing another person’s personal identification information with intent to defraud, possession of a controlled substance, and related offenses, according to NBC Los Angeles. Detectives told the station they are still determining whether Ariel was the person who stole the Lexus and that he remained in custody Friday while the investigation continues.
