A day of thrills at Cedar Point turned tense over Father’s Day weekend when a guest said a small metal washer dropped from the park’s Magnum XL‑200 roller coaster and came within inches of her head. Staff temporarily shut the ride for safety checks, ran test cycles, then later reopened the coaster and handed out premium meal vouchers to the group after they reported the rogue part.
In a video shared on Facebook, Marisol Santiago holds up the round metal piece and writes that “a piece of metal missed my head by inches,” according to PEOPLE. In her clip and follow-up comments, Santiago said park employees thanked her group for speaking up and immediately took the train out of service while crews checked it over.
Park response and reopening
According to WKRC Local 12, a Cedar Point spokesperson confirmed that a “small metal washer” detached from the coaster’s lift mechanism. The park said Magnum XL‑200 was taken offline as a precaution while maintenance teams carried out a thorough inspection. After running test cycles, the ride reopened, and the park reported no injuries.
The safety context
The incident inevitably stirred memories of a 2021 accident at the park, when a detached metal object severely injured a guest and ultimately led to that ride’s permanent closure, as PEOPLE noted. That history helps explain why even a small part falling from a high-speed attraction can rattle visitors, no matter how quickly the park says inspections are done.
Cedar Point lists Magnum XL‑200 as one of its longtime signature coasters on the park's website, and officials emphasized both the inspection and the safe reopening in their public comments. Guests who want to keep tabs on safety updates or advisories can check the park’s site before or during their visit.
