Erik Cargile of Charlotte says he had been “having visions” of a lottery win before a $3 Quick Pick ticket in his pocket turned into a $100,000 Powerball payoff. His ticket for the June 10 drawing matched four white balls plus the red Powerball, and a Power Play multiplier doubled his prize. He claimed the prize this week and now has a six-figure boost toward his next chapter.

The ticket initially matched four white balls and the red Powerball for a $50,000 prize. Because Cargile had added the Power Play option and a 2X multiplier was drawn, his payout doubled to $100,000, according to the NC Education Lottery.

Cargile told WSOC-TV he knew something was up as soon as he scanned the ticket, but he initially figured the prize was “like $10,000.” He only learned the true amount when he arrived at lottery headquarters on Tuesday to claim it. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $72,011 and said he plans to put the winnings toward buying a house.

Where the ticket was bought

Cargile bought the Quick Pick ticket at the QuikTrip on West W.T. Harris Boulevard in north Charlotte. The chain lists the store’s address as 8325 W Wt Harris Blvd, according to QuikTrip.

Powerball basics

Powerball is sold at retail locations across North Carolina as well as through the NC Education Lottery’s website and official mobile app. The odds of hitting the top prize are about 1 in 292 million, and the June 10 drawing left the jackpot standing at a $348 million annuity or $157.5 million cash option, the NC Education Lottery notes.
