A welfare check outside a Cimarron Hills gas station turned into a fentanyl bust on June 19, after El Paso County deputies say they pulled two people from a running car and found more than 200 suspected pills, cash and baggies inside. Both occupants were booked on multiple drug-related counts and have since bonded out.
How Deputies Found The Car
The El Paso County Regional Communications Center received a call about a suspicious vehicle parked at the Loaf n' Jug at 6695 Galley Road in Cimarron Hills, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrived to find a running car with an adult man and woman inside who appeared unconscious, the agency said.
The caller told dispatchers, according to the post, that "there were two individuals inside the vehicle who appeared to be impaired and the vehicle had been there for approximately one hour." Deputies removed both occupants from the car. Officials say Fuentes had an active warrant, and deputies reported finding drug paraphernalia on him.
Search Turns Up Pills, Cash And Charges
After searching the vehicle, deputies recovered approximately 212 fentanyl pills, about $2,300 in cash, and small Ziploc-style baggies, as reported by KKTV. Fuentes, 38, was booked on unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, the station reports.
KKTV notes that 62-year-old Angela Vigil faces the same possession counts, along with alleged unlawful distribution or sale of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, and possession of paraphernalia. Booking records show Fuentes was released on a personal recognizance bond, while Vigil posted a $10,000 bond.
Fentanyl Risk And Local Response
Illicit fentanyl is frequently pressed into counterfeit pills and can be lethal in very small amounts. Statewide public health tracking shows synthetic opioids continue to drive a large share of overdose deaths, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
El Paso County Public Health notes it distributes free Narcan (naloxone) kits at county locations and urges caution because the illicit drug supply is unpredictable, per the guidance from El Paso County Public Health.
Legal Implications
The reported allegations of unlawful possession, distribution, and DUI carry criminal and administrative consequences under Colorado law, including potential felony exposure for distribution offenses and penalties for impaired driving. Justia publishes Colorado's criminal code, which outlines sentencing ranges and penalties for controlled-substance offenses and impaired driving. Formal charges and any potential enhancements will be handled in the county court.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says the investigation remains active and is asking anyone with information to contact the regional communications center, according to the Facebook post. Deputies have not publicly said whether the seizure is connected to a broader trafficking investigation.
