Kroger, the Cincinnati-based grocery giant, is reshuffling its loyalty deck, telling customers today that Points can now be cashed in for dollars off groceries as well as the usual fuel discounts. The tweak opens up a direct payoff for shoppers who never hit the chain's fuel centers but still rack up loyalty Points week after week.
Under the updated setup, members earn Points the same way they did before, but those Points now have a new target: 100 Points can be turned into $1 off groceries, up to 1,000 Points or $10 per day. At the pump, nothing changes: fuel redemptions stay at 10¢ off per gallon for every 100 Points, up to $1 off per gallon. Kroger laid out the rules and fine print in a company release, according to PR Newswire.
Where It's Rolling Out and How to Redeem
Kroger's Rewards hub spells out how the grocery option works. Shoppers need a digital account and at least 100 Points to redeem. Once Points are converted, the savings show up automatically on the next eligible in-store or online order, according to Kroger.com. The company also flags that the grocery redemption is limited to "select locations only" for now, with Columbus-area and Indianapolis-area stores, along with several affiliated banners, included in the first wave.
Why Kroger Says It Changed the Program
The change, coming out of Kroger's Cincinnati headquarters, is framed as a bid to give customers more flexibility and more immediate relief at the register, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier. "We're excited to help customers stretch their budgets and give more choices in how they use the rewards they earn shopping with us," Megan Shaffer, group vice president of customer growth and strategy, said in the company release, as reported by PR Newswire.
Who Benefits and Who Doesn't
Industry watchers point out that fuel redemptions still usually deliver more value per point for drivers, since a full tank can make 1,000 Points stretch much further than the $10 daily grocery cap, according to TheStreet. On the flip side, the new grocery option will be more meaningful for shoppers who walk, ride transit, or rarely have to fill a large gas tank. Kroger also reported to investors that fuel reward redemptions climbed about 10% year over year in the latest quarter, a detail noted in earnings coverage and transcripts on Investing.com.
How Shoppers Can Check and Redeem
To use the grocery redemption, customers sign in to their digital account, open the Points Summary, and hit "Redeem Points" before checkout. The savings then appear on the receipt, per Kroger.com. Kroger's terms list familiar exclusions such as gift cards, money services, postage, and certain pharmacy items, and the company caps grocery redemptions at 1,000 Points per day, so it is worth skimming the FAQ before committing Points.
For now, the grocery option is rolling out as a cautious test while Kroger watches how shoppers split their Points between aisles and fuel pumps. Regular gas buyers will often still squeeze more value out of the pump discount, but the new choice gives non-drivers a straightforward, immediate price cut on food. Shoppers can check the Kroger app or their local store's Rewards page to see whether the feature has landed in their area.
