A Branford man is behind bars after deputies say he drove to Lake City to meet someone he believed was a minor. The suspect, 28-year-old Justin Dean Hutchings, was arrested on June 12 and taken to the Columbia County Detention Facility. According to Columbia County deputies, he faces multiple felony counts and was booked with bond set at $400,000.
How deputies say the arrest unfolded
According to a post from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Hutchings communicated online with a detective working undercover with the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Investigators say he then drove from Suwannee County to Columbia County, where Lake City police helped with the operation. Deputies took Hutchings into custody when he arrived at a prearranged meeting spot.
Charges and legal context
The sheriff's post lists counts that include traveling to meet a minor, use of a computer to solicit a child, attempted sexual battery on a victim over 12 but less than 18 by a person over 18, transmission of material harmful to minors, and unlawful use of a two-way communications device. Those allegations correspond to provisions in Florida law, including travel and solicitation rules in Fla. Stat. 847.0135, transmission-to-minors restrictions in Fla. Stat. 847.0138, unlawful use of two-way communication devices in Fla. Stat. 934.215, and sexual battery definitions in Fla. Stat. 794.011. Each cited statute carries felony-level exposure if prosecutors move forward and secure convictions.
Investigative details
The sheriff's post also notes that Hutchings' vehicle appeared to have been recently cleaned and that deputies found a shovel and a tarp inside when they stopped him. After the arrest, deputies transported him to the Columbia County Detention Facility, where he remains in custody pending action from prosecutors, according to the agency.
Part of a wider regional effort
Columbia County detectives are part of the North Florida ICAC Task Force, a multi-agency unit that runs undercover operations targeting suspected online predators, as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement explains. Similar undercover takedowns have unfolded in and around Lake City this year, including a prior sting that led to the arrest of an Ocala man in a reported Lake City teen sex trap sting.
How to report and what officials say
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office urges parents to keep a close eye on children's online conversations and to report any suspicious or inappropriate contact to law enforcement. The agency provides reporting instructions, a 24-hour non-emergency line, and anonymous tip options on its website and FAQ page for anyone with information.
