The Washington Monument is getting its glow back for Independence Week, as Freedom 250 rolls out a massive projection-mapping show on the National Mall. The five-night run starts July 1 and continues through July 5, with looping nighttime sequences that culminate in the obelisk shining like an enormous birthday candle in honor of the nation’s 250th. The return of the spectacle feeds into an already jam-packed holiday stretch of flyovers and fireworks centered on the Mall for the Fourth of July.
According to WJLA, the illumination will run nightly from 9 p.m. to 12:20 a.m. Each evening features an 18-minute projection-mapping presentation that transforms the monument into a tower of light, imagery and patriotic storytelling. Organizers say the presentation is designed to “celebrate America’s history, achievements and enduring spirit” and to inspire future generations, per Freedom 250.
Keith Krach, Freedom 250’s CEO, told WJLA that “the overwhelming response to the Washington Monument Illumination made it clear that Americans wanted to see it return.” He called the show a “spectacular tribute” to the American spirit as Washington braces for large crowds on the Mall.
What to expect on the Mall
The 18-minute show will play on a loop each night and wrap up with the monument lit as a 250-foot “birthday candle.” Visitors should be ready for security checkpoints, magnetometers and a tight clear-bag policy. Freedom 250 advises arriving early and following all posted rules. Officials recommend taking transit and checking for service alerts before heading to the Mall.
A brief history of the light show
The projection concept debuted on New Year’s Eve with a six-night run that officially kicked off programming for America’s 250th anniversary. The obelisk has only rarely been used as a projection screen, including a 2019 display tied to the Apollo 11 anniversary, according to the Washington Post. That early installation drew big crowds and plenty of debate about how the nation’s past should be presented on the Mall.
Anyone planning to go should expect heavy crowds on July 4 and limited street access. Check the latest transit information at WMATA and keep an eye on Freedom 250’s updates for any schedule or security changes. Bring water, arrive early and be prepared for bag checks if you want a close-up view.
